Synopsis
After adventurer Trigger Carson is chased into rocky cliffs by Luke Todd and his gang of cattle rustlers, he unexpectedly encounters his old friend Jed, a prospector for gold and the last of the Clintons. Nicky Ramirez, one of Luke's men, is killed by Jed, and the outlaws give up the chase. Much to Jed's dismay, Trigger decides to infiltrate Luke's gang in order to surreptitiously investigate its illegal activities, and after he is accepted into the group, he rides into town with Luke's brother Marty, who stops for a clandestine rendezvous with his girl friend, Edith Elkins. Trigger meets with Edith's father, Jim Elkins, the head of a local citizens committee formed to stop the rustlers, and both Elkins and Luke become suspicious of Trigger. Jed later gets hired by Luke as a cook, and Lefty, another member of the gang, catches a rattlesnake, which he plans to keep as a pet. Shortly before the next raid on the cattle, Trigger is ordered by Luke to abduct Edith in order to distract the community while the cattle is stolen and taken across the border. However, upon learning that her father has imprisoned Marty, Edith arrives at the Todd ranch to tell Luke so that an escape can be arranged. Edith, however, is taken prisoner at the Todd ranch, and Luke has Trigger tied up when he realizes that he is an imposter. After leaving Pete, one of his henchmen, to watch Trigger and Edith, Luke and his men set off to rescue Marty, but with Jed's help, Trigger and Edith get away from Pete and soon after encounter Marty, who has escaped on his own. When Elkins and his men arrive, Marty surrenders to them and reveals that Luke is about to drive the rustled cattle across the border. In the meantime, Luke returns to the ranch, and when he realizes that he has been folowed by Trigger, he orders Pete to let the rattler loose. While Pete is out of the room, Trigger overpowers Luke and ties him up, and the snake bites Luke. Although Trigger subsequently tries to help Luke, it is too late to save him. Elkins arrives, and before dying, Luke pleads for mercy for his brother, who knew of the gang's cattle rustling, but never participated in it. Trigger's job is done, and he and Jed set off, looking forward to new adventures.
