Synopsis
New York hotel manicurist Polly Dunlop is the only witness to a gangland killing by Ed Lustig. Fearful of retribution by Lustig, Polly takes a bus headed for Boston, but gets off in the small town of Clearview, Connecticut, when she sees a patron of the hotel on the bus. Using a pseudonym, Polly finds work as a waitress and befriends schoolteacher Earl Daniels. When newspaperman Marty Blake finds Polly, she calls on Earl for help and he hides her at his grandfather's farm. Earl has fallen in love with Polly, but refrains from proposing because he believes she is wealthy socialite Polly Barnes, who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Earl's grandfather, Gramp, and his hired hand, Zeke, call millionaire Barnes and report his "daughter's" whereabouts, but Barnes' arrival at the farm exposes Polly as a fraud and her picture is printed in all the newspapers. Polly confesses her true identity to Earl, who pledges to accompany her when she leaves Clearview, however, Lustig and his henchman find them at the farm. To save her life, Polly proposes marriage to Lustig, since a wife is not allowed to testify against her husband in court. Lustig agrees and while a justice of the peace is sent for, Earl sends a secret note to a neighbor asking for help. The police arrive just in time to prevent the marriage and, with Polly's positive identification of Lustig as the murderer, arrest the gangster and his henchmen. Polly and Earl then marry.
