Synopsis
While cleaning the London offices of real estate speculator James Ryder, Mrs. Cragg, a charwoman, finds an unsmoked cigar in the wastebasket. She wraps it in a discarded telegram and brings it home to Pitt Street to Colonel Whitforth, an out-of-luck gambler for whom she also works. He uses the valuable information in the telegram and makes a £5,000 profit on the stock exchange. Doubting his honesty, Mrs. Cragg is about to give her half of the money to Mr. Ryder when she overhears his plans to raze Pitt Street and build luxury offices there. Consequently, under the guidance of the colonel, she and three other charwomen form their own company. Though one of their numerous financial schemes almost ruins them, the ladies bring an end to the Pitt Street demolition. Forced to capitulate, Ryder is taken in as a partner, and flats are to be built instead of offices.
