Synopsis

Friedrich Struensee, a renowned brain specialist, is summoned to Copenhagen in 1776 to give his opinion on the mental condition of 19-year-old King Christian. Struensee finds that the king is a lonely, brooding boy, whose stepmother, Queen Juliane, hopes to have him pronounced incapable of ruling Denmark so that her own son can assume the throne. Struensee, however, decrees that young Christian is sane. Through Struensee's psychological guidance, Christian is able to effect a reconciliation with his English wife, Mathilde. As a result of his efforts, Struensee becomes prime minister and the most powerful man in Denmark, until he falls in love with Mathilde. Their affair becomes a scandal in the royal palace, and Christian is persuaded to sentence them both to death. Struensee lies to save Mathilde, and she is permitted to return to England. As the bells ring to announce the death of Struensee, King Christian breaks down in a fit of madness.
