Synopsis

Newspaper reporter Paul Kimberly quits his job when his editor, Edward Denton, refuses to print his story about the apparent suicide of veterans' housing administration executive James A. Prentice. Though Paul is almost certain that Prentice, who was due to testify in court about his involvement in a housing scandal, was murdered by someone hoping to prevent him from talking, Denton does not believe that Paul has enough evidence to prove his claim. In time, though, Denton comes to suspect gangster involvement in Prentice's death and, hoping to lure Paul back, assigns the story to cub reporter Anne Arnold, the daughter of the newspaper's owner, Vincent Arnold. Paul and Anne begin separate investigations into the racketeers responsible for Prentice's death, though neither of them are aware that Anne's father is the leader of the gang. However, when Margo, Vincent's secretary and mistress, is spurned by Vincent, she threatens to tell Anne and the police what she knows about his illegal activities. Anne, meanwhile, goes to interview housing official Brent Maddux, who was to be a witness at Prentice's trial, at his nightclub. There, Paul persuades Anne to combine their investigations, and soon both a professional and romantic association blossoms between them. Paul later witnesses Vincent's henchmen, Chips Rand and Bull Callahan, murder Maddux and reports the news to police captain McManus. When Anne calls her father and tells him about her big story, he reprimands his henchmen for allowing Paul to witness Maddux's murder. Later, just as Margo is about to tell Paul that Vincent is the head of the racketeers, she is killed by Chips and Bull. The two gunmen then try to kill Paul, but he manages to escape unharmed. When Paul discovers documents proving that Vincent is the head of the racketeer gang, he tells Vincent what he knows and points his gun at him. Vincent, who killed Prentice, is about to shoot Paul when Chips enters, shoots Vincent and tries to steal the money embezzled as part of their housing scheme. Chips turns to fire his gun at Paul, but Vincent, in his last dying act, fires his gun and kills Chips. Paul tries to shield Anne from the horrible truth about her father, but she overhears the news and tearfully writes the story herself. With the case solved, Paul and Anne embrace and kiss.
