Synopsis

In the ancient port city of Jaffa, Israel, Palestinian homeowner Salim has been ordered to vacate the house that has been in his family for over 40 years and to pay a fine for "squatting." His lawyer tells him that all he can hope for is a settlement from the government-operated housing firm. Salim is resigned to losing the family dwelling. The crumbling but beautiful old homes in this once-wealthy district are now being gentrified by Israelis. Salim, his sister and their elderly mother gaze fixedly ahead as if waiting for the impending end. The sister comes across leaflets from a group opposed to expulsion--she sees other soon-to-be-displaced households as red dots on a map. Family photos and paintings come down so that an Israeli film crew can, ironically, memorialize the vanishing architecture of these indigenous residents.
