Synopsis

In feudal Japan, Genta, a one-time warrior who turned gambler when the samurai code forced him to kill his best friend, meets and befriends Hanjiro, a farmer's son who dreams of becoming a samurai. Meanwhile, several other samurai have banded together in a united effort to overthrow the despotic overseer of the province of Joshu. Their leader, Matsuo, tells them that he is going to present their case before the tribunal, and the men agree to hide out in a deserted fortress until a decision is made. Matsuo, however, is in league with Ayuzawa, another overseer, and the two men plan to assassinate the rebellious samurai hiding in the fortress. To accomplish this Ayuzawa dispatches a troop of archers to the fort and, for added insurance, recruits a group of farmers, including Hanjiro, to join in the assault. Genta, siding with the samurai, is captured and tortured by Matsuo's men, but he refuses to talk. Hanjiro nurses his friend back to health, and, grasping the truth of the situation, he joins Genta and the other samurai to fight against the evil Matsuo. Combining their cunning and skill with the sword, the two men help to defeat Matsuo's forces and put an end to the reign of tyranny. Once the battle is over, Genta tries to explain to Hanjiro that being a samurai does not necessarily mean being on the side of good.
