Synopsis
Gunner Malone, a veteran boxer who is reliable but not spectacular as a fighter, wants only to fight the champion. Before he gets a chance to do that, however, the champion retires. Meanwhile, Rush Conway, a Texas cowboy stranded in New York after a rodeo closes, attends a heavyweight match at Madison Square Garden thanks to his friendship with young newsboy Bobby Doyle. When Stan Wilson, the match's loser, walks off without paying Bobby for his newspaper, Rush tries to stop him and they fight. Gunner sees the fight and is so impressed that he decides to train Rush as a boxer. Rush is not interested in Gunner's offer until he meets Gunner's sister Mary. Tutored by Gunner, Rush advances rapidly. He and Mary fall in love, and Rush promises Mary that he will never fight her brother. The boxing commission names Gunner the defender of the title, but he cannot be named champion until he fights the winner of a particular elimination bout. Rush is the winner, but he refuses to fight Gunner as he promised Mary. Rush and sportswriter Kenneth Rockwell try various tricks to force Rush to meet Gunner in the ring, until finally, in desperation, Gunner goads Rush into fighting and finally wins his championship. Afterward, Rush marries Mary, and together with Gunner and Bobby, they all retire to a Texas ranch.

Although this movie was basically completed in 1936 and reviewed under the title "Don't Pull Your Punches" in January 1937 by The Motion Picture Herald and the Hollywood Reporter, it was released in 1938. The new title was probably due to the success of Kid Gallahad (1937), making it look like a sequel.
Notes
The film's working title was Trial Horse. Although the film was reviewed by Hollywood Reporter and Motion Picture Herald in January 1937 as Don't Pull Your Punches, it was not released until 1938. At that time it was retitled The Kid Comes Back, perhaps to take advantage of the popularity of the 1937 Warner Bros. film Kid Galahad, which also starred Wayne Morris as a boxer.
