Synopsis

An ancient Dalmatian coastal city has enjoyed a 300-year respite from crime. During World War II, however, Italian occupation factionalizes the inhabitants, among them the crippled fascist convert, Piero, who delivers a death sentence to his elderly neighbor, Kaya. While soldiers wantonly vandalize buildings and statuary, the townspeople amuse themselves by killing small birds and harassing the village idiot. As Piero stalks Kaya, neighbors close their doors and windows to shut out the old man's murder.
