Synopsis

In 19th-century provincial Russia, Katerina Izmailova, the wife of a wealthy merchant, stifles in the boredom of her dull domestic routine and, in the absence of her weak-willed husband, Zinoviy, falls in love with a new farm laborer, Sergey. Her tyrannical father-in-law, Boris, learns of the affair and flogs Sergey into unconsciousness. In revenge, Katerina poisons the old man. Later, she and Sergey murder Zinoviy and hide his corpse in the basement; but the crime haunts Katerina, and the village drunk often sees her standing by the cellar door. On the day Katerina and Sergey are to be married, the drunk steals into the basement, finds Zinoviy's body, and notifies the police. Katerina is publicly beaten, and she and Sergey are sent in chains to Siberia. Despite the cruel hardship, Katerina stoically endures until Sergey tells her that he never loved her but was attracted by her wealth. Heartlessly he demands that she give him her woolen stockings and presents them to Sonetka, a younger prisoner. Taunted by Sonetka and the other convicts, Katerina is consumed by anger and grief. As the prisoners are transported across a lake by ferry, she seizes Sonetka and leaps into the water, drowning both of them.
