Synopsis

Stoney Brooke and Rusty Joslin deliver a shipment of horses to a Caribbean Island, where they plan to sell the horses to the Commandante of the island and his confederate, Captain Gonzales. En route to the barracks, they are ambushed by Renaldo, the leader of a band of revolutionaries, who informs them that the Commandante has been oppressing the peasants by taxing them beyond their abilities and then confiscating their possessions and throwing them in jail. Skeptical, Stoney and Rusty proceed to the barracks, where they are paid in gold for the horses. As they leave the compound, they are ambushed and robbed by some soldiers, and seek refuge at Renaldo's camp. Searching for their assailants, the trio visit a cantina, where a fight ensues in which Renaldo is wounded, and Stoney leaves Rusty to take care of him while he reports the theft to the Commandante. When the Commandante doubts his story, Stoney angrily leaves the office. Returning for his gloves, he overhears the Commandante and Gonzales plotting the demise of the Governor General of the island. Stoney dons a mask and enters the palace to warn the Governor and his daughter Maria of the danger. Meanwhile, the Commandante, advised by his sentries that a masked rider is in the building, rushes to a hall outside the guest quarters and shoots the Governor through a ventilator. When her father falls dead in her arms, Maria believes that the masked rider is responsible for his murder. To prove Stoney's innocence, Rusty disguises himself as a peasant and delivers a note to Maria, setting up a rendezvous with Renaldo. Maria, however, notifies the Commandante of her meeting, and Renaldo is captured and doomed to face the firing squad unless he discloses the name of the masked rider. Eventually Maria learns the truth, and rides to the outlaw camp to warn them of Renaldo's danger. Upon returning to her quarters, she is imprisoned by the Commandante while Rusty and Stoney scour the countryside, recruiting volunteers to storm the garrison. After overthrowing the Commandante, Stoney and his band of revolutionaries discover papers that incriminate the corrupt government in tax fraud. Having freed his people, Renaldo joins Stoney and Rusty as they return to Kansas.

Notes

The working title of this film was Heroes of the Saddle, which was the release title of the next film in the series. This picture marked Robert Livingston's return to the role of Stoney Brooke, which John Wayne had played in eight previous films in the series. It also marked the introduction of Duncan Renaldo's character Renaldo as one of the Mesquiteers. Modern sources add Merrill McCormack, Artie Ortego, Curley Dresden and Al Haskell to the cast. For more information on the series, please see the entry below for The Three Mesquiteers.
