Synopsis

Wealthy Calcutta industrialist Indranath and his family vacation in Darjeeling. Beside the great Mount Kanchenjungha they walk, converse, and drink tea. During the final afternoon of the holiday, family members voice dissatisfaction with Indranath's absolute domestic rule. His wife, Labanya, for example, disputes his choice for daughter Monisha's husband, the wealthy Bannerjee, whom the girl despises. His son Anil, meanwhile, moves fleetingly from one romantic pursuit to another. Although Indranath's son-in-law Shankar confronts his adulterous wife, Anima, the couple decides to preserve their marriage for the sake of their daughter Tuklu. In defiance of her husband, Labanya sends her brother Jagadish to tell Monisha she has the right to choose her own husband. Discouraging Bannerjee's suit, Monisha befriends Ashoke. The idealistic youth declines Indranath's offer of a position, confounding the patriarch. As Indranath expresses his confusion, the mist lifts over Kanchenjungha.
