Synopsis
Life is an endless joy for madcap young Parisian Edouard Berlon. He takes pleasure from everything: animals, objects, strangers, the very air he breathes, and, most of all, the innumerable women with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love. Living with him in a charmingly unconventional house is his Uncle Théodose, an aged epicure who encourages his nephew's escapades; his brother Guillaume, a tenth-rate photographer who supports them by posing the family in tabloid representations of historic deaths; Edouard's former mistress, Pilou, who is now Guillaume's wife; a maid, Olga, who has been in the house so long that nobody knows quite how she got there; four large dogs; and Edouard's two cherubic and well-loved illegitimate children. One day Edouard again falls hopelessly in love, this time with Hélène Laroche, the beautiful, sophisticated wife of an industrialist. When she resists him, he dramatically announces that his life is over, and, mournfully playing the bassoon, he waits for death to claim him. But his charm once more proves to be effective, and Hélène decides to go away with him, much to the pleasure of Edouard's family. When she turns out to be a complaining and frigid mistress, however, the illusion of love is shattered and Edouard becomes bored. Shrugging his shoulders, he meets a young, attractive waitress, and they go off together.
