Synopsis
Joe Kovak loves being a test pilot for aircraft plant owner Sam Bentley, the former partner of Joe's deceased father. Because Joe's father was killed while flying, however, his mother now despises his chosen profession. Sam, who is trying to secure an Army contract for his planes, needs Joe's flying expertise, but warns the younger man that he is growing too cocky and disobeying orders too frequently. Meanwhile, Sam's rival, Oscar Collins, wants Joe, a crack pilot, to work for his company to improve the company's chance of winning the government contract. At the same time that Sam grows fed up with Joe's defiance, Collins offers his public relations chief, Marge Stevens, a $500 bonus to lure Joe to their company. When Sam fires Joe after he takes one too many risks, Joe's anger toward Sam and attraction to Marge provoke him to accept the job with Collins. Joe spends the next few weeks wooing Marge and inspecting Collins' planes, which he considers substandard. During a test flight, Collins orders Joe to fly too high, and after Joe complies, the plane crashes. Joe escapes unharmed, but Collins claims that the fault lies with Joe rather than with the plane, and revokes his flight license. Soon after, Joe learns about Marge's bonus and wrongly assumes that her interest in him is purely financial, and later, upon seeing her in the arms of another man, fails to note that she is being held against her will. Upon discovering that Sam has planned a test flight to demonstrate his planes to the Army, Joe sneaks into the plant and slips into the pilot's seat just before takeoff. His superior flying convinces the government officials to hire Sam's company, and Sam thanks him by promising to have his license reinstated. As Joe returns to work at Bentley Aircraft, Marge approaches him, and they embrace.
