Synopsis
Jenny Marsh, a young woman who is pregnant and unmarried, leaves her home in Connecticut for New York. There she finds a job in an antique shop filled with movie memorabilia and awaits the arrival of her baby. One afternoon she meets Delano, a filmmaker, and they become friends. Delano explains to Jenny that he is being pursued by the military draft at a critical point in his career. Having concluded that the best way to avoid the draft is to have a family, Delano suggests that they enter a marriage of convenience, thus providing Jenny's child with a father and Delano with a draft deferment. Jenny consents, and they travel to Connecticut to introduce Delano to Jenny's parents. Returning to New York, they get married, and Jenny moves into Delano's apartment. Jenny, having fallen in love with Delano, is disappointed when he continues to see his girl friend Kay, though they had arranged to have separate bedrooms and live separate lives. One night Delano gives a party, and Jenny, not wanting to smoke marijuana and feeling ignored by most of the guests, leaves the apartment. She walks into a Greenwich Village bar and meets Fred, who is attending a convention in the city. They drink together, take a walk, and end up in the lobby of a midtown hotel. Slightly drunk, Jenny falls asleep and upon awakening returns to the apartment early the next morning to find Delano angry and worried. She suddenly realizes that Delano is falling in love with her, and their marriage becomes happier. Just before the baby's birth, however, Delano learns that his request for deferment has been denied and he will be drafted.
