Synopsis

When several boneless human corpses are found on a small island off the coast of Ireland, Dr. Landers, the local physician, calls in scientists Dr. Stanley and Dr. West, to investigate the phenomenon. At the research laboratory they discover the formless bodies of Dr. Phillips and his assistants, who had been experimenting with a cancer cure. Examination of the doctors' notes reveals that they had developed a silicon-based form of life which feeds on bone calcium. The monsters, having tortoise-like bodies, are indestructible by firearms or dynamite; and, worse, they divide every 6 hours and will overrun the island within a week. More islanders die, including Dr. Landers and Constable Harris. Finally the scientists develop a plan for destroying the creatures. All of the cattle on the island are injected with the isotope strontium 90. The silicates feed on the cattle and are killed by radioactive poisoning.
