Synopsis
Victor Molnár, an orchestra conductor in Budapest, retires and emigrates to the United States with his wife and young son, Ted, who takes with him a prized violin presented to him by Emperor Franz Joseph. They rent an inexpensive apartment in New York, and Ted looks up Lena, his former sweetheart, now a member of the Ziegfeld Follies. Ashamed of Ted's appearance, she greets him coolly. Ted is unable to find work with a symphony orchestra, and, faced with overdue rent, he borrows money on the precious violin, telling the family he has a job. Meanwhile, he practices the saxophone in the park, where he meets Gail, who is employed by a theatrical manager. When his parents discover him playing jazz in a Hungarian café, they are outraged and his father is heartbroken. Aided by Gail, Ted forms his own jazz band and becomes a star, and a family reconciliation takes place on Christmas Day.
