Synopsis

In Louisiana, following the mysterious disappearance of private investigator Charlie Brown, Nick Steele, head of the National Indemnity Co. adjustment office, assigns Eve Rogers and Mike Reagan to take over Charlie's investigation of the Baylor necklace theft. As Charlie disappeared in the swamp near the Baylor estate, Mike and Eve suspect that the Baylors are filing a false insurance claim. When Mike and Eve disagree about how to go about investigating the family, they decide to split up and work independently. Eve tries to befriend Eric Baylor, head of the family, by posing as a member of the Dixie Historical Society and feigning an interest in the family's genealogy. Eric rejects Eve's offer, but Rosalind, Eric's sister, is intrigued by the project, and invites her to stay. Rosalind invites Eve into her home and introduces her to her mother Martha and grandmother, Mrs. Shroud, who asks Eve why she would be interested in "the most disreputable family in the South." Rosalind later confides in Eve that both she and her mother despise Eric, and that the brother she loved, David, killed himself. Eric eventually consents to help with Eve's "research project," and soon takes a romantic interest in her. Meanwhile, Mike and Marie Ravelle, a young woman whom Mike has befriended, sneak onto the Baylor property to investigate the place, but they are chased away by Eric's dog. The following day, Mike and Marie interview the Baylors about the theft, and there meet Eve, who is still posing as a genealogist. Eric, who has discovered Eve's true identity, asks her what she has learned in her investigation, and then invites her to join him on a trip to New Mexico. Marie, who is actually Eric's mistress, tells Eric that she is spending time with Mike to keep him from learning the truth about the Baylors, but Eric kills her because he believes she knows too much about the fake claim. Late one night, Eve discovers that David is still alive, and overhears Eric asking David for the stolen necklace. David, however, refuses to turn it over until he gets the insurance money from Eric. When Eric finds evidence that Eve overheard his conversation with David, he tries to pin the blame for the false claim entirely on his brother. Eric asks Eve to remain silent about the fraudulent claim, and Eve, who has fallen in love with Eric, consents, believing that she can persuade him to return the necklace. Eric later kills David, takes the emerald necklace and invites Eve to his cabin. Mike arrives in time to prevent Eve's murder, but finds himself in a battle for his life with Eric. Eric is killed in the ensuing fistfight, and the necklace is recovered. With the case solved, Eve proposes marriage to Mike, and they seal their love with a kiss.
