Synopsis

After a lengthy separation, two lovers who have met by accident at a party meet at the woman's old London flat and recall their brief affair: Middle-aged, married orchestra conductor Stefan Zelter is interviewed by Sally, a young journalist. When her newspaper prints his libelous remarks the musician is sued and his performances suspended pending litigation. During his enforced holiday, Stefan and Sally fall in love. Their relationship is hampered by feelings of guilt, however. Confronted by Zelter's wife Antonia, who generously offers her husband his freedom while emphasizing his absolute absorption in music, Sally renounces the relationship. Following their chance encounter, Sally phones her new husband.
