Synopsis

Animas Trujano, a Mexican peasant, has one dream in life: to be elected The Important Man, the mayordomo of the town at the time of its annual carnival, and thus receive the whole town's respect. In reality, he is a drunken, philandering gambler, whose wife and children must support him. Whenever Animas has money, he spends it on Catania, the town prostitute. Discovering his daughter making love with the son of the distillery owner, Animas assaults him and is sent to jail. His wife works hard to raise his bail money, but Animas is released early and wastes it all. His luck changes when he manages to sell his daughter's illegitimate baby to the distiller; with the money, he buys the election and becomes the mayordomo . The usual respect accorded the office does not come his way, however, so Animas again begins drinking and carousing with Catania. His wife finally becomes disgusted with him and murders the prostitute. Realizing that he has one last chance for redemption, Animas goes to confess the murder, thus sparing his wife.
