Synopsis

With very little money, newlyweds Carl Brent, an engineering student, and Nora Clegg, an actress in her father's Shakespearean company, head for New York to seek their fortune. Carl rejects a number of job offers before he realizes that he must find work soon or face poverty. When Carl returns to the firms that had offered him jobs, however, he is told that all the positions have been filled. Carl is eventually forced to take a job as a moving man in order to survive, and he begins to vent his frustration on Nora. Nora, meanwhile, rejects a lucrative job offer in Chicago so that she can remain with her husband, who does not know that she is working as a taxi dancer in a Chinese restaurant. Later, Mr. Sandstone, head of an engineering firm, is offended when Carl turns down his job offer in Russia without an explanation. When Carl discovers that Nora is working as a taxi dancer, he becomes angry, demands a divorce and decides to take the job in Russia. In reponse, Nora tells Carl that she, too, has had a job offer and will be moving to Chicago, but she does not tell him that she is pregnant. Carl goes to Sandstone to accept his job offer, but Sandstone, still angry, rejects him. Desperate for money, Carl steals some money from Sandstone's desk and, feeling guilty about the way he had treated Nora, buys new clothes for her. Carl and Nora make amends on their last night together, only to be disturbed by a detective, who has come looking for Sandstone's money. When Carl privately tells the officer the reason he took the money, he gains his sympathy and manages to keep the theft a secret from his wife. After the couple separate, Carl serves his time in prison. Upon his release, Carl is given a job by Sandstone, who has had a change of heart after learning his story, and he is soon reconciled with his wife.
