Synopsis
Andrzej Leszczyc has been dodging the draft for 3 years by pretending to be an ichthyology student at the university. Now having abandoned his thesis, he suddenly decides to enlist in the military service. At the recruiting office, he is interrogated, given medical tests, and ordered to catch a train bound for military camp that afternoon. Faced with a few hours to sort out his personal life before entering the army for 2 years, he returns to his apartment but says nothing to the woman he sometimes calls his wife. After she leaves for work, Andrzej notices that his dog is sick. At the animal clinic the dog is discovered to have hydrophobia and is put to sleep. In a cafe, an artist friend tells him of the numerous sexual encounters he has had with lonely housewives. While collecting a certificate at the university as part of his enlistment procedure, he meets a girl who has just enrolled. They talk at length, but eventually he leaves to find one of the housewives whose address was given to him by his friend. The woman is evasive, and he departs to find his wife, but nobody has heard of her at the shop where she supposedly works. He goes home, and when his wife returns, he chastises her about the true nature of her work. Rushing to the station to catch his train, he sees the girl from the university waiting for him, but there is no time for them to be together.
