Synopsis

Three middle-aged men spend a day hunting rabbits on land where, years before, they fought during the Spanish Civil War. José, the organizer of the party, is an arrogant man who hopes to borrow money from Paco, a wartime comrade who has grown rich through shrewd business manipulations. The third man, Luis, is a semi-alcoholic escaping from reality through science fiction stories. Also on hand is Paco's teenaged brother-in-law, Enrique, who is anticipating the thrill of his first hunt. When José approaches Paco for a loan, Paco bluntly refuses. During the hot afternoon one of the ferrets used to rout the rabbits from their holes is shot by Paco, who detests the ferocious little animals. As the killing of the defenseless rabbits intensifies, the smoldering hatred and frustrations of the three men are triggered when Paco is killed by a blast from José's shotgun. Luis, enraged by what he believes to be premeditated murder, leaps into a jeep and drives full force at José. The latter retaliates by shooting Luis in the face, but he himself is also mortally wounded. Shocked, the unharmed Enrique stares numbly at the carnage surrounding him.
