Synopsis

Arriving in London with an American detective friend, Joe Blake, to investigate a house he has inherited, Barry Wilding finds mystery, danger, and love. Because of Margery Gordon, Barry decides to investigate a strange note to Home Secretary Forbes, Margery's unexplained anxiety at his presence, and the curious lurkings of one Wu Chang. Flying knives, blackjacks out of nowhere, dungeons, and poisonous fumes add to the danger. The mystery is finally solved with the arrival of Forbes, who explains the strange presence of Sir Hubert Harcourt, a great scientist whose mind has snapped. Harcourt recovers his sanity, Margery is rescued from a dungeon, and the true source of the trouble turns out to be Warton and Bill--crooks in search of pirate treasure--who prove to be a bonus for Blake in his pursuit of the murderer of a manuscript collector.
