Synopsis

While sailing home from the South Seas islands, where he has been living for ten years, Ralph Nelson and his partner, Don Phillips, are forced to jump overboard when their ship catches fire and explodes. Rescued by natives, Don shows up at the San Rafael estate of Ralph's aunt Ida and passes himself off as Ralph. Although Aunt Ida, Ralph's cousin Martin and Ralph's childhood fiancée, Sylvia Evans, fail to recognize him as an imposter, Don is found out by Uncle Weatherby, the family lawyer. When confronted, Don tells Weatherby that Ralph had been badly hurt in the shipwreck and had asked him to do the impersonation in order to protect Sylvia from Martin, whom Ralph suspects was involved in his father's recent mysterious death. Weatherby then confides in Don that he suspects Martin and Gordon, the butler, of murdering Ralph's father, and encourages Don to continue his impersonation to obtain proof of their guilt. After Don questions Martin, who wants to marry Sylvia and have access to the money she inherited from Mr. Nelson, he is approached by an anxious, confused Sylvia. Out of loyalty, Don fights his attraction for Sylvia but, at Weatherby's urging, remains silent about his identity. During a birthday party that Sylvia throws for Don, Ralph, having recuperated from his injuries, arrives, introducing himself as Don. Sylvia soon recognizes Ralph as her old sweetheart and runs crying to her bedroom. In the meantime, Martin and Gordon, whose criminal past had been unearthed by Don, plot to shoot Don and make the killing look like a suicide. Don, guessing their intentions, leaves a dummy in his room and watches as Gordon shoots the dummy through a hidden opening in the wall. The next morning, Martin and Gordon, startled by Don's appearance at breakfast, escape in the Nelsons' car, but as they are being chased by police, they crash and die. His father's murder exposed, Ralph then encourages Don to pursue Sylvia.

Notes

According to a Hollywood Filmograph production chart, this film was based on credited story writer C. C. Cheddon's The Great Gamble. It is not known if this title refers to a published work, or an original screen story. Although onscreen credits list Sam Ferus as distributor, Sam Efrus was the president of Peerless Pictures in 1934 and was most likely the person to whom the credits were referring.
