Synopsis
Although Steve and Carol Cleaves are moving from the city for the benefit of their 6-year-old son, Davey, the boy is unhappy about leaving the only home he has ever known. After trying ineffectively to share his misery with Otis Lovelace, the town derelict, Davey wanders unnoticed into the moving van, unaware that the two truckdrivers, Bull, a huge, violently emotional man, and Eddie, his terrified, weak-willed partner, are murderers who killed someone the previous night. As a result, Davey finds himself locked in as the truck starts up for his new home. En route Bull and Eddie haul the murdered man into the van and then stop again at a deserted area where they bury the body. Aware now of Davey's presence, the murderers realize they have an eyewitness, whereupon Davey, keenly aware of his danger, flees to the farm house of a kindly couple, Sam and Selma. Bull tells the couple that Davey is his runaway son, and they return the boy to the killer. Meanwhile, Davey's frantic parents have called in the police, unaware that Otis, the one person who could help them, has been killed in an automobile accident. In the midst of the desperate boy-hunt, however, Eddie becomes sympathetic to Davey and, for the first time, finds sufficient courage to stand up to the demented Bull. After a near-fatal ride in the moving van on a rain-slippery highway, Eddie accomplishes his goal by delivering Davey safely to his distraught parents.
