Synopsis

Young Robin "Robbie" Grant, the heir to a ranch, escapes from a nearby orphanage and steals U.S. Marshal Steve Saunders' horse. Steve has come to town to find the murderer of a government surveyor who was working on the ranch. Ownership of the ranch is being contested by the relatives of Robbie's dead parents, Don Grant and Lola Webster. The feud began when Chris Grant was killed and Ellory Webster, who was running the ranch with Chris, was blamed for his death. Ellory was presumed killed during a fire, and now it is rumored that his ghost haunts the ranch. When Robbie's relatives refuse to let him stay at the ranch, Sheriff Smiley Burnette shelters the boy in the town jail. Later, disguised as masked crime fighter The Durango Kid, Steve speaks with Patty McGregor, who works as a cashier at the hotel owned by Phineas Grant, the leader of the Grant faction. Steve reveals that he knows she is the sister of the dead surveyor and is secretly trying to find his killer. After his attempt to kill Steve fails, Duke Webster, the leader of the Webster faction, is jailed. Phineas then kidnaps Robbie and frees Webster, who is secretly his partner. Meanwhile, Phineas, who suspects the ghost is a living person, organizes all the Grants for a manhunt, and Duke assembles all the Websters. The Durango Kid breaks up the ensuing fight and arrests both Phineas and Duke. He then forces them to admit that they are really partners and are trying to eliminate the other heirs so that they alone will have access to the oil they know is on the ranch. Duke reveals that Phineas killed Chris, and in retaliation, Phineas discloses that Duke killed the surveyor to prevent him from announcing his discovery of oil on the ranch. Now that the feud has ended, Robbie receives the ranch and Ellory, who was not dead, comes out of hiding.
