Synopsis
Schoolteacher Mary Evans arrives in Ainsley, Indiana in the midst of a milk strike against John Matthews, owner of Ainsley Dairy. Matthews has been trucking in milk from elsewhere to beat the Ainsley farmers, who refuse to accept his low prices. Shockey Carter, who lives on the East side of town across the railroad tracks with his father, an alcoholic shell-shocked war hero, fights Roger Townsend, the son of the storekeeper, because Roger insults Shockey's father. The principal, Miss Hodges, suspends Shockey until the next board meeting, over Mary's objections. Mary goes to meet Shockey's father, the Captain, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for capturing four enemy soldiers alone, and she becomes friends with him and Shockey. At the schoolboard meeting, Roger's father tries to get Shockey sent to the state board of corrections, but Mary convinces the board to have him reinstated and assumes full responsibility for his conduct. At the "basket" social, Matthews' son Jack, whose advances Mary has rebuked more than once, helps Mary and Shockey takes the Captain home after he drunkenly interrupts Shockey's dance exhibition. Jack promises to get the Captain a job at the dairy. When Jack and Mary see farmers dumping "bootleg" milk, Jack tries to get them to present their demands nonviolently, but his father won't listen. After the farmers barricade the roads, the Captain volunteers to drive a truck through and, envisioning his war battles, drives through into a ditch to his death. Shockey packs to leave, but Jack's father tells him that the town is proud of his father, as the strike has been settled because of his death, and he takes Shockey to live with him.
