Synopsis
War-weary, former military captain John Carter is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom (Mars) and its people rests in his hands.

Other books in the 11 volume series include "The Gods of Mars," "The Warlord of Mars," "Thuvia, Maid of Mars," "The Chessmen of Mars," "The Master Mind of Mars," "A Fighting Man of Mars," "Swords of Mars," "Synthetic Men of Mars," "Llana of Gathol" and "John Carter of Mars."
Kerry Conran was previously attached to direct.
Jon Favreau previously attached to direct.
Robert Rodriguez was previously attached to direct, but had to leave the project when he resigned from the DGA to co-direct "Sin City" with Frank Miller.
Paramount purchased book rights for $300,000 against $2 million in 2002.
