Synopsis

After pretty, blonde teenager Maggie learns that she is pregnant, her boyfriend refuses to marry or help her. Because she cannot tell her parents, Maggie runs away from home and starts to hitchhike. After another hitchhiker, Diane, steals Maggie's money, Maggie hitches a ride with a truck driver who buys her dinner, then rapes and abandons her at a truck stop. The next day, when Maggie tries to steal some food in a grocery store, a clerk catches her and threatens to turn her in to the police if she does not sleep with him. Maggie is able to get away by hitching a ride in a truck driven by a hippie named Benson. Benson later drives Maggie to a secret commune in the desert that he shares with four attractive young women, Karen, Jinx, Brook and Diane. Because Diane is Benson's girl friend, she jealousy attacks Maggie. During the assault, Maggie has a miscarriage. Benson then goes into town to find a doctor, and after the doctor treats Maggie, Benson buys his silence by having the other girls seduce him as Benson photographs them. When Maggie is well again, she joins the other girls in their scheme to hitchhike rides with unsuspecting men, then rob them. Diane's jealousy of Maggie increases to the point that she almost drowns her in a fight. After using part of the money from the girls' robberies to purchase an old school bus, Benson intends to drive his girls to Los Angeles. The night before they leave, they have a wild party with their fence, Reb, during which everyone gets high on drugs. The next morning, when Benson, Maggie and Brook awaken, they discover that Reb, Diane, Karen and Jinx have left with everything of value. Benson, Maggie and Brook then steal a car from an old farmer and drive to town, where they retrieve their bus. Finally, on the road to Los Angeles, the trio picks up another pretty young hitchhiker.

Notes

A Hollywood Reporter news item on March 23, 1971 announced the production of The Hitch-hikers, which at that time was to be released in summer, 1971, but it is unclear whether or not filming already had started on the picture. Although The Hitchhikers was not copyrighted at the time of its release, Sebastian Films Limited, Inc. registered a videocassette version of the film on January 11, 1983, under number PA-243-829. The summary for this unviewed film was based primarily on a synopsis contained in the film's pressbook.
Husband-and-wife filmmakers Ferd and Beverly Sebastian previously had made several X-rated pictures. According to the film's pressbook, they also appeared in small roles in the film, as did Ferd Sebastian's father, the couple's two children and the family dog, "Rebel." Reviews emphasized that, although the film resembled an X-rated picture, the story's sexual escapades were implied rather than explicitly shown, thus earning an R rating.
The Hitchhikers marked the film debut of most of the cast members, many of whom never made another film. The picture also marked the film debut of lead actress Misty Rowe, a Southern California beauty queen who had been "Miss Wahini Bikini" and "Miss Radiant Radish," then went on to act in numerous films and television shows into the 1990s, most notably on the television series Hee Haw and When Things Were Rotten.
