Synopsis
Three robbers, Edward Mortimer "Doc" Griffin, Benjamin B. "Big Ben" Cooper and Horace "Spike" Weber, two of whom are also boxers, rob the Cattleman's Trust and Savings Bank. They get away in a car, but are captured after burying the loot in the forest. Nearby, Nora, who owns a horse ranch, goes broke because all her money was lost in the robbery. Her ranchhands promise to stick with her despite the lack of pay, but her foreman, Tom, becomes determined to save the ranch by earning money as a boxer. He is a successful fighter, and is approached by the chief of police, who asks him to work undercover to find the stolen money. As part of the plan, Tom is incarcerated with the robbers. He is unable to earn their confidence, however, and is forced to maintain his cover when they escape from jail with him. The police and Nora then lose faith in Tom, believing he has gone crooked. When Tom takes horses from the ranch, Doc takes Nora hostage, and they set out into the forest to find the booty. Accidentally starting a forest fire, Doc shoots both Spike and Ben to keep the loot for himself. Nora escapes and she and Tom's horse "Tony, Jr." head for safety. In the meantime, Tom makes his way through the burning trees, knocks out Doc and hides the money safely, then rescues Spike after Ben dies. Tom "squares" himself with Nora and proposes, then rides off to return the money to the bank and "square" himself with the law.

Tom Mix's horse, Tony, stumbled during a chase scene and landed on top of Mix. The star was badly injured. The horse suffered a permanent injury and was replaced in future films by Tony Jr.
Notes
The plot synopsis in the copyright records is titled Tom's in Town, but that title was crossed out in favor of Hidden Gold. It is unclear if the former title is also a pre-release title for the film. The onscreen credits bill Tony, Jr. as "The Miracle Horse." Publicity records state that scenes from an actual forest fire were used in the film, as the crew encountered the fire while on location.
