Synopsis
Soon after John MacGregor, a research scientist at the Cummings Manufacturing Company, perfects his formula for a lightweight metal that could revolutionize the war effort, mysterious people begin to arrive in town. The first is Professor Werner, a famous archaeologist who has just returned from an expedition in Alaska. John's son Bill, a newspaper reporter with a penchant for detective work, is sent to interview the professor, and while at Werner's office he meets Sonya Manning, a reporter from Philadelphia. After Bill leaves the office, the professor, who is actually a foreign agent on assignment to steal the formula, is confronted by several FBI agents. Werner escapes the trap, but Sonya is arrested, and Bill is fired for missing the big story. Determined to get the story, Bill picks Sonya up at the police station where she has just been released, and that night, while they are at a bar, Sonya meets Eric Bowman, another agent, who warns her to drop the case. Later, Werner's henchman, Mueller, assaults John while attempting to steal the formula, and Bill sneaks into the plant to investigate. Overhearing Bowman purchase the formula from Cummings, the owner of the plant, Bill tries to stop the deal, but is taken prisoner. Sonya then steals the formula from Bowman, and after attempts by Bowman and Werner to retrieve the formula fail, Bowman returns to Cummings' office, where Sonya walks into his trap. Just as Bowman acquires the plans from Sonya, Werner steals them and is chased by Sonya and Bill, who force his car over the side of a cliff. After the arrest of Bowman, Werner and their henchmen, Sonya reveals that she is a secret agent working on the side of the United States government, and Bill wins back his job by scooping the story.
