Synopsis
A revealing look at the existence of slavery in contemporary North Africa. Intially, the documentary filmmakers go to study the cause of the Polisario Liberation Front, which represents the Sahrawi people (meaning "people of the Sahara"), who have long struggled for control of the Western Sahara against the competing interests of Morocco and other factions. While inside a refugee camp controlled by the Polisario, they discover a complex hierarchy between the white Arabs and blacks, all of whom consider themselves Sahrawi. Their main subject of study is a black woman in her thirties named Fetim Sellami. This young woman has a noticeably servile relationship to an older white woman named Deido. Upon further questioning, the filmmakers record persuasive testimony that a form of slavery continues to be practiced. The Polisario staunchly maintains that it forbids slavery. When the filmmakers raise the topic in the camps, they soon find themselves shunned by the locals. And fearing that their tapes will be seized, the filmmakers bury them in the desert and flee. Here, we watch as they now desperately struggle to recover their tapes to expose this human rights issue.
