Paying his bills with construction jobs, John keeps honing his drumming skills, eventually impressing both his new girlfriend Sara and the manager of a local jazz club. But just when things start to look up, several detours interrupt John's journey to success. When he learns that Sara is pregnant, he walks out on her. Then, he gets a call from his mother that his fatehr has terminal lung cancer and may not be able to fulfill a committment to record his last jazz album.
