Synopsis
Young Mixiang, a simple girl from Sichuan, is raising her mentally challenged son by herself. Desperate, Mixiang listens to neighborhood girls who tell her about how to make easy money. There are coal mines to the north and the workmen are always having accidents. If she can marry a man who dies in the mine, she will receive a large sum of money as compensation. In order create some security for their future, Mixiang decides to marry for this death dowry. Mixiang and her son move to a mining town in Henan, where she marries an ugly, hunchbacked, middle-aged miner named Tuozi. After the wedding, Mixiang eagerly awaits her husband's early demise. As the days pass, nothing happens. Her husband, Tuozi treats Mixiang and her son well, working extra hours to bring more money home. In order to speed up Tuozi's early death, Mixiang ends up putting a curse on him. The mine does end up collapsing but Tuozi survives as he was in town that day buying Mixiang some fruit. Since the first curse worked, but did not completely fulfill her wish, Mixiang tries repeating it.
