Synopsis
In the Swiss Alps, Paul, a taciturn farmer, lives with his wife Rosine and animals. Emotionally-stunted, Paul treats his wife like a worker, and when she shows signs of ill health, he chalks it up to a much wished-for pregnancy. When Rosine eventually becomes bedridden, Paul decides to hire a Spanish farmhand, Eusebio. Handsome and mischievous, Eusebio immediately charms Claudie, the owner of the bar in the nearby hamlet. Soon, he extends his disruptive presence to Paul's world as well. Pangs of jealousy begin to rack Paul, inciting him to beat Rosine, something that he had never done before. The following day, Eusebio calls the paramedics and Rosine is hospitalized. Paul suddenly finds himself more isolated than ever. When he finally decides to pay Rosine a visit, he discovers she has left the hospital without him. In her absence, Paul begins to recognize his wife's true worth.
