Synopsis

Vera Ivanova, daughter of a Moscow fishmonger, loves dissolute student Paul Pavloff, a boarder in their quarters above the fish market. Paul loves Vera, but he neglects her and his studies to drink and gamble. She marries, at her father's request, Baron Serge Palma, a man with a good name and the means to support Vera. Later, Palma is banished for 20 years to Siberia for alleged involvement in the assassination of the czar's cousin. On the road Palma meets Paul, now a medical doctor, also exiled to Siberia for a minor infraction. Because he is sorry for Vera and her child, Paul exchanges his 2-year sentence for Palma's 20. Vera follows Palma into Siberia with her child, who dies of exposure. Arriving there, she finds Paul and lives with him until her husband comes to help them escape. When Palma senses that Vera and Paul are in love, he kills himself, allowing them to escape to a happier life. (In an alternate ending the two lovers are captured and sent back to Siberia to finish their exile.)
