Synopsis

A notorious outlaw known as The Hawk is terrorizing the Powder River area with stagecoach and bank holdups and has killed a newspaper editor who campaigned against the outlaw. Deputy U.S. Marshal Eddie Dean receives orders to proceed to Powder River to investigate The Hawk, who is actually a woman named Vivian Chambers and lives on the H Bar 2 Ranch, which belongs to her uncle Bill. After Bill tells Vivian that his daughter Carole is returning home from school soon, he finds The Hawk's hideout, but is surprised by two of her men and killed. Vivian arranges to have Carole killed so that she can inherit the ranch but Eddie overhears the gang planning to attack the stage on which Carole is traveling and boards it. When the four gunmen pursue the stage, Eddie shoots two of them and the others abandon the chase. In town, Eddie, who is working undercover, introduces Carole to his sidekick, Soapy Jones, and she hires them to work on the ranch. Cochrane, The Hawk's second-in-command and Bill's lawyer, tells Carole that her father died in an accident. The Hawk's gang rob a lone horseman carrying a payroll but, after a chase, Eddie recovers the cash. Cochrane loses his hat during the shootout and Eddie marks it and puts it back for the unidentified gunman to recover. Later, at Cochrane's office, Eddie tells the lawyer to arrange the reading of Bill's will for the next day. Eddie and Soapy then decide to hide Carole until the will is read, but Vivian tells her gang to find her cousin. After Eddie sees the hat he had marked in Cochrane's office, he accuses him of being involved in the payroll robbery. The two men fight, and Eddie eventually gets Cochrane to confess that he works for The Hawk, Vivian Chambers, and that she is out looking for Carole. When Vivian and her gang find the shack where three of Eddie's friends are guarding Carole, a gun battle ensues. Eddie and Soapy arrive in time to help and Eddie kills Vivian. Later, Carole invites Eddie and Soapy to stay, but they explain that they have to move on.
