Synopsis
In Washington, D.C., Ambassador DeMarco is seeking a $5,000,000 loan for tiny, financially strapped Kingdom of Lower Salamia from the dotty and superstitious millionaire, Filbert Fillmore. During an evening meeting at the embassy, Filbert frets about the alignment of the stars, but his domineering wife, who really controls the purse-strings, is ready to sign a check for DeMarco. Both Fillmores praise DeMarco's lovely daughter Estelita for not running around at night like other modern girls, unaware that she has sneaked out a window and is now singing in a nightclub, where the staff call her "Havana Rose." A visiting gentleman rancher from Nevada, Tex Thompson, is impressed with her performance and comes to her aid when he mistakes her father's chauffeur Carlo for a masher. Tex and Estelita get acquainted, and after promising to see each other soon, part. However, at the embassy, Estelita accidentally stumbles into the room where her father and the Fillmores are meeting and spills hot coffee on Mrs. Fillmore. No longer in a generous mood, Mrs. Fillmore cancels their agreement and leads her husband out. The ambassador's failure to secure the loan is reported by spies working in the embassy to Gen. Cucarotsky, who is in Lower Salamia planning an insurrection. Although DeMarco wants to send Estelita back to their country, she is determined to make amends and escapes from Carlo on the way to the airport. Disguised as a gypsy fortune teller, Estelita approaches Filbert and, with the help of her disapproving chaperon Maria, tricks him into believing that the time is propitious to make a loan. Although Mrs. Fillmore acts jealous when she catches Estelita and Filbert together, she reluctantly agrees to give the matter of the loan more thought. Later, at an embassy cocktail party, Mrs. Fillmore spies on her husband through a keyhole and sees Estelita being courted by Tex. Mistaking him for Filbert, she decides to leave her husband. DeMarco again orders Carlo to take Estelita to the airport, but she again escapes with Maria in tow and hops a plane to Reno to visit Tex. To prevent her father from tracking her to the Reno hotel, Estelita registers as "Mrs. Fillmore," but a nosy reporter overhears and calls Filbert to confirm the breakup of his marriage. Believing that his wife is in Reno for a "quickie" divorce, Filbert heads there, hoping for a reconciliation, and is told by the hotel detective that his wife is spending time with Tex. Trying to get the courage to confront the tall Tex, Filbert drinks, but then passes out, and the detective delivers him to Estelita's room. Meanwhile, Cucarotsky's henchmen, who have been sent to assassinate Mrs. Filmore before she can lend the money, overhear that she is in Reno and proceed there. However, the real Mrs. Fillmore, who is still in Washington, has had a change of heart and returns to Filbert, only to find that he has taken off for Reno. There Estelita and Tex meet for dinner, where Cucarotsky's henchmen, still thinking she is Mrs. Fillmore, pose as waiters and try unsuccessfully to poison her drink. Then a hotel clerk tells Tex that Estelita is married to Filbert. When Estelita tries to explain the situation to Tex with her broken English, she unwittingly incriminates herself with infidelity, and Tex prepares to leave in disgust. The real Mrs. Fillmore arrives and heads for Estelita's room, where the henchmen try to abduct her. Although Filbert gets knocked out trying to rescue her, Tex responds to Mrs. Fillmore's calls for help. By the time the henchmen have been subdued, Tex is also knocked out, just as Filbert regains consciousness and is embraced by the grateful Mrs. Fillmore as her hero. Having tracked down Estelita, DeMarco and Carlo then show up and recognize Cucarotsky's henchmen. Upon awakening, Tex is relieved to meet the real Mrs. Fillmore. Later, in Washington, Filbert, who has taken charge of his household, signs the loan check, with the adoring Mrs. Fillmore at his side, while Tex gives Estelita an engagement ring.
