Synopsis
While on summer vacation from her convent school, Laura Lavigne stays with her mother and aunt in a small town near Buenos Aires. She inquires about noises in the upstairs portion of the house and is told that for the past 20 years the attic has been occupied by her deformed, illegitimate halfbrother. Overcome by curiosity, she sneaks up to the room and discovers that the occupant is actually Aunt Inés, who supposedly has been living in the United States. Years earlier, Inés was jilted at the altar by wealthy Cristóbal Achával; and because of family honor, she imposed a life of lonely seclusion on herself. Laura seeks out Cristóbal in an attempt to reunite him with her aunt. Although she too succumbs to his charms, she persuades him to visit the upstairs room. The sight of seeing her former lover proves too much for Inés, and she dies from shock. Shortly after the secret funeral, Laura becomes Cristóbal's mistress and goes to live with him in Buenos Aires. Alone in her room, she suddenly realizes that she has fallen into the same trap as Inés--for as long as Cristóbal wants her, she will be his prisoner.
