Synopsis
Ranch hands Sam and Connor attempt to drive cattle secretly owned by leading citizen Dave Morgan through land owned by Marjorie Miller. They are stopped, however, by her uncle, Sheriff Ed Miller, because the cattle are from Sage County, which is under quarantine to prevent the spread of Texas cattle fever. Marjorie and Miller are aided in turning back the men by Gene Autry, Frog Millhouse and Shorty, who are members of Professor Parker's traveling medicine show. Morgan then stages a town meeting and uses quack veterinarian Dr. Schaefer to prove that the fever is not contagious. He is foiled again, however, by Parker, a real veterinarian who emphatically states that the disease is contagious. The townspeople run Schaefer out of town and vote to support the quarantine, after which Connor orders Gene to leave town by five o'clock or face the consequences. While Parker and his entertainers conduct their show, Miller and Deputy Clark are riding on the trail and discussing the case, when they are ambushed by Connor and Sam. The lawmen are hidden and left for dead, but after Gene makes it clear that he is staying in town, he and Frog find them and save Miller, who is still alive. Gene decides to keep their discovery secret until they can find the killer. Meanwhile, Morgan determines to get his henchman, Frank Hall, elected sheriff so that he can drive his infected cattle to auction. Morgan's men use threats to drive off the opposing candidate, M. T. Jenkins, and the people nominate Gene to run against Hall. Morgan is stymied until Connor finds Miller's handcuffs and badge in Gene's hotel room. Morgan accuses Gene of killing Miller and tries to have him arrested, but Gene escapes. Gene then despairs of winning the election, but Marjorie organizes the town's women, and all of them convince their men to vote for Gene. Gene wins the election by a landslide and then deputizes a posse to apprehend Morgan and his men, who have begun a last-ditch effort to drive their cattle across the county. Gene and Frog participate in the ensuing shootout, then chase Morgan and Connor. They trick the two desperadoes into revealing that they know where Miller and Clark were hidden, thereby confirming their guilt. Miller congratulates Gene and Frog as they put Morgan and Connor in jail, and with peace restored in the town, the cowboy medicine show continues on its way.
