1h 36m 1970

Brief Synopsis

Parents in a small, conservative community don't think that the sex drive is a normal thing for children to experience. So much so, that they label education in that regard as a communist plot. The group of prudes is led by an impotent alcoholic and a gay policeman.

Synopsis

Dr. Lily Whitehorn, head of the Institute for Interpersonal Relations, attempts to initiate a sex education course in the high school of a middle-class suburb, but she is thwarted by the conservative members of the community. Among the staunchest protestors are Roger Manley, a homosexual-hating vice-squad lieutenant, who believes that sex education is a communist conspiracy to undermine the moral backbone of the nation, and Lance Battle, an alcoholic, sexually impotent ex-Marine colonel, who lives in a World War II fantasy. The men's frustrated wives, however, are far more sympathetic to Dr. Whitehorn's crusade; following a morning of sipping coffee and smoking marijuana, Eve Manley asserts her own liberated sexuality by coercing Rita Battle into a lesbian affair. Later Eve volunteers herself as a sex partner for the Battles' 17-year-old son, Robbie. As Lance watches Eve and Robbie make love, he becomes so stimulated that he overcomes his impotence; and Robbie, having been initiated into the pleasures of sex, turns his attention to Lydia, Dr. Whitehorn's pretty assistant. Lydia invites everyone to the institute for nude swimming, and Roger takes it upon himself to save Robbie's endangered morals. As he peeks through the trees at his uninhibited friends, Roger is horrified to find himself sexually attracted to Robbie. He rushes off to hang himself but is cut down by Billie, a black prostitute who once satisfied his sexual desires. After proving that he is not a woman but a detective in disguise, Billie arrests Roger for homosexual soliciting and dereliction of duty. Finally acknowledging that they are more in need of sex education than their children, the adults sign up for Dr. Whitehorn's course. As a final irony, Dr. Whitehorn confesses that she has no sex life but intends to remedy the situation as soon as possible.
