Synopsis

District Attorney John F. X. Markham calls in ace detective Philo Vance when he and his men are unable to solve the death of eccentric Chester Greene, allegedly shot to death by a member of his own family. Vance's investigation reveals an atmosphere of hatred in the Greene household. Two more Greenes are murdered before the mystery is solved when the person least suspected falls to death into the icy waters of the East River while committing another murder.
