Synopsis
Jack quits ranching to become a gold miner. He befriends oldtimer Jeff Sellers, who is trying to steal his claim, and out of kindness, Jack sells him half the claim. When Jeff goes into town, however, he wastes all his money on drink, so Jack withholds some of his gold earnings to help him save. One day at the bar, Jeff drunkenly complains that Jack stole his claim and is now stealing his money. He is convinced to sell half his claim for $3,000 and golddust to Cramer, not realizing that Cramer is a thief. Just as Jeff is about to sign, Jack comes in and takes him home, where they find that Marion, Jeff's daughter, has arrived. Jeff tells Marion the same lie about Jack, and although Jack previously had helped her with a flat tire, Marion's opinion of him is poisoned. Cramer returns the next day, and this time, Jeff signs the papers. Unknown to him, Cramer has been buying claims then killing the miners and robbing them of the money he paid them. Cramer's cohorts kill Jeff, and when Jack is found near the body, he becomes the prime suspect. Jack returns to the cabin to tell Marion that he is innocent, but she tries to turn him over to the police. He escapes and goes to see his stuttering friend Elmer. They devise a plan by which Jack sells Elmer his claim, then Elmer sells it to Cramer. They capture Cramer, however, and when his cohorts expect to kill and rob Elmer, they actually kill Cramer, who is dressed like Elmer. Jack proves his innocence to the police and to Marion, with whom he begins plans to build a new house.
