Synopsis
Following the Civil War, soldiers of the North and South head West on the Bozeman Trail into Sioux Indian country. Yankee lieutenant Gilchrist and his colonel's daughter, Lucy Strong, arrive at Fort Phil Kearny in Wyoming with a load of ammunition. There, they meet Confederate captain John Morgan. John's company of ex-rebels has refused to accept surrender and is determined to establish a Confederate colony along the Bozeman Trail. Renegade white Riley, who is traveling with his scout, Indian Joe, is aiding the Indians in their fight to deter the white man's encroachment on their land. After Riley helps the Sioux steal Gilchrist's ammunition wagon, John, who has been detaining Lucy at the rebel camp to get her to like him, is blamed. Determined to clear himself, John sets out to recover the ammunition. Gilchrist, meanwhile, incriminates the rebels to Union officer Captain Fetterman, who sends his soldiers to recover the ammunition. When the soldiers arrive at the rebel camp, they find John and his men celebrating the recovery of the ammunition. Fetterman places the rebels under arrest, but John refuses to recognize the colonel's authority and insists that he and his men return the ammunition to the fort themselves. After delivering the ammunition to Colonel Strong, John informs the officer that he and his men are planning to build a colony in the district of Powder River. Although Strong warns John about Chief Red Cloud, the Confederate soldiers build homes and plant crops in anticipation of the arrival of their families. John and Lucy, meanwhile, have fallen in love. Riley then frames Confederate lieutenant David Kirby for the murder of a Union soldier during an Indian attack. When Strong orders that Kirby be handed over to the Union soldiers for a trial, John is determined to have Kirby tried by his own men. Fearing Strong's retaliation on the new settlement, Kirby confesses, even though he is innocent; a jury of his own men finds him guilty and sentences him to death. As Kirby is shot down by a firing squad, a soldier confesses to John that Riley forced him to steal Kirby's sword so that he might be accused of murder. The soldier also warns John of Red Cloud's approach. A Union soldier then arrives at the settlement and tells John that all of Fetterman's cavalrymen who were en route to arrest Kirby have been massacred by the Indians. Hope lies in the approaching wagon train, which is carrying more rifles. When thousands of Sioux Indians raid the caravan, Union and Confederate soldiers join forces under John and force the Indians to retreat. Following the death of John's sister Julie, who had just arrived, John recites marriage vows during a mass wedding between his men and their newly arrived brides, while Lucy repeats the vows at John's side.
