Synopsis
Franco, a career-oriented assistant surgeon, gets off his train in Rome and meets his childhood friend, Yolanda, after 15 years of separation. They fall in love, and Franco soon becomes aware of Yolanda's unpredictable and unconventional attitudes. When Yolanda literally interprets Franco's complaints about his job and releases all the animals he uses for his experiments, he is appalled. Nevertheless, they travel to Florence together, where Yolanda takes in a crippled tramp. Franco is angered and leaves her, returning to Rome to become director of a hospital. A year later, Franco and Yolanda meet again, find they are still in love, and take a vacation in the country, where they are happy until Yolanda's Dutch, guitar-playing boyfriend appears. Franco instructs his aging Uncle Egidio to tell Yolanda that he has left her. When Franco is called to Egidio's deathbed in Sweden some time later, he finds Yolanda there. Once again, Franco and Yolanda get together, and all is well until Yolanda learns that a wild trip they had--including a boat theft and a house-borrowing--was prearranged and paid for by Franco. She leaves in a rage, but they meet again, and Franco finally convinces Yolanda to marry him. At the altar, however, she refuses to take the vows, and Franco decides that he is through with her forever. Several years later, they accidentally meet at another train station; Franco is now minister of health, and Yolanda is the mother of a number of illegitimate children. Their meeting is brief, and they board different trains.
