Synopsis

Mary Chesbrooke, a model, runs away from her job after her boss, Alex LeMaire, attempts to make her his mistress. She is accompanied by her friend, Molly Shane, a former model who had accepted a similar offer from Alex in the past. After he lost interest in her, Alex gave Molly a low paying job as a seamstress, and Molly does not want the same thing to happen to Mary. Alex follows Mary to the ship and threatens to have her arrested for stealing a fur coat, which was actually a gift from him, if she does not return with him. When he tries to drag her off the boat, Molly stabs him with the pin from the corsage he sent to Mary. Alex leaves the ship, but the pin has struck a vital area and he dies on the dock. Sam LeMaire, Alex's brother, tells the police about Mary's relationship with Alex, thereby providing her with a motive for the murder. The ship's captain has Mary placed under technical arrest. Although Mary does not know why she is being held, Molly reads a cablegram describing Alex's death and realizes that she is the cause of her friend's trouble. When fire breaks out in the hold, Molly writes a confession, hands it to Mary and jumps overboard. In the shock of the events, Mary loses the paper, but rescues a small boy, Bobby Stacey, whose mother has died. When they are finally on shore, Mary overhears two policemen say that she is wanted for murder. Pretending to be Molly, she accepts the thanks of Paul, Bobby's father, who is a district attorney. Paul offers Mary a temporary refuge, but Bobby is having so much trouble adjusting to the death of his mother, who was estranged from his father, that Paul begs Mary to stay and help him with his son. In the meantime, reporter Joe Gray hounds Mary for an interview. He discovers that Molly also had a motive for murdering Alex, and when he sees Mary, he realizes that she is too young to be Molly. Paul has also learned that Mary is not Molly. He has fallen in love with her, however, and when she announces that she must sail to China, he asks her to stay and marry him. After she tells him the truth about herself, he offers to resign his position and defend her at her murder trial. Determined to save his reputation, Mary disappears during the night. When Mary learns that Paul was asked to resign anyway, she turns herself in. While preparing her defense, Paul finds the orchid pin in Molly's coat as well as a business card from Wilbur Jenkins. Paul questions Wilbur, who describes having seen Molly hit Alex in the chest. Her name cleared, Mary embraces Bobby and Paul.
