Synopsis

Erie McCadden, the daughter of a mean, hard-drinking barge captain, falls in love with Fogarty, a tugboat pilot who teaches her to read. McCadden finds them together and fires Fogarty, who then defiantly takes Erie to a fair. McCadden beats her on her return, and Fogarty attempts to elope with her. McCadden knocks him unconscious and takes his barge downriver. Months later, the barge breaks loose from its Hudson River mooring in a storm and drifts out to sea; Fogarty goes after it in his tug and manages to throw the McCaddens a line. He is knocked unconscious by a falling lamp, and Erie crawls along the rope and pilots the tug to shore. Two years pass. McCadden swears off drink, and Erie and Fogarty present him with a grandson.
