Synopsis

On the eve of her theatrical debut, singer Marquita Romero is summoned from her home in Rio de Janeiro to New York to help her brother Carlos, who has been arrested for murder. Leaving behind her sweetheart, Steven Ward, an American newspaper reporter, Marquita arrives in New York, where she learns from Carlos' wife, Annette Templeton that her brother is being held on arson and murder charges. Becoming suspicious when she learns that Mitchell, the owner of the cabaret in which Annette and Carlos were performing, had fired the dance team over his jealousy of Annette and then had summoned Carlos to the club on the day of the fire, Marquita goes to talk to Carlos' worthless attorney, who believes that his client is guilty. Soon after, Steve arrives from Rio and, after locating Marquita, calls in a favor from his old friend, the respected attorney Roger Montgomery, who agrees to defend Carlos. Discovering that Mitchell had collected on a series of fire insurance losses, Steve approaches investigator Dennis Slater of the Pyramid Fire Insurance Company with his evidence. The inspector demands more substantial evidence, however, and hoping to find something incriminating, Marquita decides to work undercover as a singer at Mitchell's club. Before she can discover anything, however, Mitchell's jealous girl friend Vicki learns her true identity and informs Mitchell, who corners Marquita in his office. In self-defense, Marquita fires Mitchell's own gun at him, and the weapon's tracer bullets set fire to the curtains, providing the clue to Mitchell's arson techniques. Steve and Slater then come to Marquita's rescue, and with Mitchell's arrest, Carlos is free to return to Rio with his sister.
