Synopsis

In the gold rush ghost town of Stillwell, senile Judge Stillwell still believes he is mayor, even though the townspeople cleared out after the election years ago. Gomer, head of a gang of crooks, decides to stay in town when he learns the judge has a gold mine. He plans to lay claim to the land of the deceased John Taylor and intercepts a letter alerting Taylor's niece in North Carolina that property taxes are due on the land. If Molly fails to pay by January 2nd, the land will be up for sale. On New Year's Eve, a group of Texas Rangers comes across the stagecoach that Gomer robbed and its dead driver outside of Stillwell. In town, Rangers Bob Martin and Tom Walton, called "Cherokee," meet the judge and Gomer, who tells them he owns the town. Molly then arrives from Charlottesville with her driver, Rosebud, and announces that she is the owner of the town. At midnight, while Molly, the judge and the rangers celebrate the new year, Gomer and his men let the rangers' horses loose in order to detain them while two of Gomer's men ride to the county seat in order to pay the taxes by early morning. When Bob confronts Gomer about the horses, he orders Slim, one of his men, to hold him at gunpoint. Gomer then accompanies the judge while he gives Molly a tour of his mine, but the addled judge is unable to locate it. Cherokee and Bob escape with the help of the judge, who tells them he is really sane and has been acting in order to save the town from Gomer. Tex, a member of Gomer's gang who is dense, but kind, tells Molly about the letter and is shot by Gomer. Bob then knocks out Gomer and finds the letter. The gang then takes Molly hostage. After the judge gives Bob gold from his mine to pay the taxes, he races off on his horse, with the gang in pursuit. Eventually, Bob gets to the county seat and pays the taxes in the nick of time. The gang is arrested for mail robbery, conspiracy and suspicion of murder. Meanwhile, in Stillwell, Gomer releases Molly, telling her he just bought her land because it was delinquent on taxes. He also tells her Bob was "taken down." Bob, however, is racing back to Stillwell in the gang's wagon. Molly packs to leave as the judge prepares to dynamite his mine. The rest of Gomer's gang leaves town, except for Slim, who is in jail. Bob arrives in time to give Molly her tax receipt and goes after the gang. The judge's explosion causes enough commotion for Bob to fight Gomer until the marshal arrives and arrests him. Molly waits for Bob to return to her as the judge teases Rosebud by pretending to be still crazy.
